The right one depends on what you’re trying to measure.

XIRR vs CAGR for SIP investments

For a SIP, XIRR is generally the more useful measure of your personal return because you are investing a fixed amount at different points in time.

Say you invest ₹10,000 every month for three years. Your first ₹10,000 has been invested for almost three years, while the last ₹10,000 has only been in the investment for a short time.

So, even though you have invested ₹3.60 lakh in total, that entire amount has not been invested for three years. Simply comparing your total investment with the final value does not account for this difference in timing.

That is where XIRR comes in. It uses the amount and date of each SIP installment to work out the annualized return on your money.

This is also why your XIRR may be different from the CAGR shown for the mutual fund scheme. The scheme’s CAGR measures how the fund’s value grew over a particular period, while your XIRR reflects what you earned based on your own investments, withdrawals and their dates.

Both figures can be correct. They are just measuring different things.

Can XIRR and CAGR be the same?

Yes. If there is only one initial investment and one final value, with no additional investments or withdrawals in between, XIRR and CAGR can produce the same annualized return when they use the same dates and values.

For example, suppose you invest ₹1 lakh on January 1, 2024, and receive ₹1.50 lakh on January 1, 2027.

There are only two cash flows:

-₹1 lakh when you invest

+₹1.50 lakh when you receive the money

There are no additional cash flows for either method to account for.

In this situation, using XIRR instead of CAGR does not give you a more meaningful return. CAGR is simpler.

XIRR vs CAGR: Which return should you trust?

It depends on what you are measuring.

If you made a single lump-sum investment and want to know how much it grew over a period, CAGR is usually the better measure.

If you invested or withdrew money at different times and want to know how your own money performed, XIRR is usually more useful.

The simplest way to remember the difference is:

Single investment with a clear beginning and end → CAGR.

Multiple investments or withdrawals at different times → XIRR.

If you’re comparing the historical performance of mutual funds, CAGR can help you compare their growth over the same period. If you are checking the performance of your own SIP or portfolio, XIRR is generally the more relevant number.

Neither figure guarantees future returns. Both are ways of expressing historical investment performance based on the values, dates and cash flows used in the calculation.

FAQs

Is XIRR better than CAGR?

Not necessarily.
